What is a coastal skipper and how can I be one ?

We are asked more than any other question. What is a coastal skipper and how can I be one ? There are two types of coastal certificate: a) The Coastal Skipper course completion certificate, that is awarded by a training centre on successful completion of a five-day training course. This is very much hands-on with little time to teach navigation or other theoretical subjects. It is therefore recommended that you take the RYA Coastal Skipper shorebased course prior to your practical course so you can put those skills into practice on the water. b) The Yachtmaster Coastal Certificate of Competence, that is awarded by the RYA/MCA on successful completion of an exam. You are not required to take the five-day Coastal Skipper course above prior to your exam. However, if you have not previously taken RYA training you may find it useful to complete the course or organise some informal tailor-made tuition. Please call to find out whats required and what you should do next. Its free advice and we want to point you in the right direction as to what to do 07990777129

Hot liquid face legal proceedings !

Legal proceedings against both the skipper and the sailing school at the centre of the New Year storm rescue have been instigated by the MCA, it was revealed today. The RYA have already rescinded their recognition of Hot Liquid Southampton as a provider of training courses following two serious safety related incidents involving the company between January 2011 and January 2012. See Yachting Monthly March for the full story and exclusive interview with Charlie Sturrock, 50, the skipper of Liquid Vortex, the Beneteau 40.7 involved in the third incident: a dramatic air-sea rescue.

Learn Navigation at your office / home or in our London Waterloo classroom

There's no getting away from it, skippers navigating a safe passage at sea must be vigilant. The tragic collision on board the Costa Concordia ealier this month was a sobering reminder of how fatal it can be to navigate on the waters without care and attention to the rules. The importance of safe navigation is upper most we can confirmed that a not-insignificant number of skippers (both trained and untrained) struggle to learn the collision rules properly. That's why examiners on these courses are marking down heavily on poor knowledge or lack of application of the rules. We at Hamilton sailing believe we give the student a first class sailing opertunatity to learn. We take this aspect very seriously and push students to learn the coll regs / navigation to a high standerd. We do this in a FUN WAY being tought by a experianced instructor face to face is the best way to learn. Checkout our classes in London Remember if you get a small group togther we can come to your office or home call us for advise 07990777129

Dutch teen becomes youngest to circumnavigate world

Laura Dekker set out from the Caribbean island of St Martin on January 20, 2011. Almost a year to the day, on Saturday January 21, she returned to the port to beat the previous record by eight months. However she will not be recognised in the Guinness Book of World Records as its policy is not to honour minors for records which are considered "unsuitable". The World Sailing Speed Record Council has also said it will not verify her claim, as it no longer recognises records for youngest sailors to discourage dangerous attempts. "I can't really take in what I've done," Dekker said. "The sailing was always nice... I often saw dolphins. I enjoyed it a lot and I'm very happy." Dekker, 16, had wanted to make an attempt on the record at the age of 14, but Dutch courts refused her on grounds of child welfare. She finally won her battle in July 2010 and started out from Gibraltar on August 21 of that year. However she was forced to change course and so started out from St Martin - owned jointly by the Netherlands and France - five months later instead. The previous record had been held by Australian Jessica Watson, who finished her journey in May, 2010 three days before she turned 17. Dekker turns 17 on September 20. Dekker's achievement is also notable because she sailed non-stop, whereas Watson sailed from port to port and was never at sea for more than three weeks at a time. A Dutch teenager has become the youngest sailor to circumnavigate the world without assistance. - 3
